YO YO Honey Singh rose to fame with his song Brown Rang. Currently enjoying the stature of being the highest paid Indian musician, Singh is creating waves with his songs Satan and Break up party. In a conversation with Millennuim Post, Honey Singh talks about his music, Bollywood and more. Here are excerpts:
What is the event with Jazzy B about?
For me, Jazzy B is a legend. I have grown up listening to his songs. He is a fashion icon for me, someone I look up to with a lot of respect. It was six months ago that Jazzy B and I decided to work on a song together. Our efforts culminated into a song named Party Getting Hot. The whole feel of the song is very unique. It is not about the time when the party has just started, it’s about that peak time when you reach a state at the party when you just want to do things you wish to. The song is very strong visually as there are gangsters doing manmani. It will be launched by us at our ‘Christmas Cocktail’ night.
Why did you get into Bollywood?
Bollywood is not something that I was initially interested in. Primarily because when you sing for films you have to adjust to someone else’s brief and schedule which is very unlike me. But I have been inundated with requests from filmmakers. One good thing about films is whether you like it or not, they give you an unprecedented reach and make you heard in the smallest of the towns and villages — the ones you never knew even existed on planet Earth.
You became an instant hit, how does it feel?
It feels great to have such amazing fan following. I was just a common man, it’s the affection of people which has made me so popular. I am thankful to people who have liked my songs and composition.
Who is the best rapper in the world?
For me Eminem is the best rapper in the world, because in every song, he speaks his heart out.
Being the highest paid Indian musician, are there any pressure moments?
There is always the pressure to give the best to my audiences every time. I always believed in myself and knew that my music is good.
You instantly connect with your audience, what’s the secret?
There is no such secret. My songs are for the masses. ‘Jo log bolte hai wahi karta hun’ and that’s why people can relate to my songs. I filled the void with desi style. Punjabi is something that so many of us speak and hearing a rap song, that too international style, is always pleasant. This I guess is the reason why my songs have touched so many hearts.
It is said that your songs are derogatory against women. What’s your take?
I know that the lyrics have always been in trouble but I always portray the truth via my lyrics. There is an underlying message in my songs. In Dope Shope when I say that ‘Main Sufiyan da raja nashe che meri rani, it stands so true in today’s scenario. I have myself seen in Mumbai that guys are conscious of their physique, working out and on the other hand girls are gulping shots after shots. (Ladke bodybuilding karte hai aur ladkiyan shot pe shot mare ja rahi hai).
