Woman’s death creates chaos at Sultanpuri

A 50-year-old woman was crushed by a DTC bus, while the driver was reversing the vehicle, at the Sultanpuri Bus Terminal in the outer fringes of Delhi, on Thursday night. Agitated locals reacted to the incident by setting one DTC bus on fire and damaging around 10 of them.

The deceased was later identified as Narayan Devi, who hailed from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. She had come to Delhi to attend a function on Thursday, said a source.

As narrated by a police official, the incident happened around 8:30 pm, when the deceased was waiting at the terminus to avail a bus for Ghaziabad. She didn’t notice the bus reversing, nor did the driver notice the woman, and the victim was crushed to death. When the localites got to know about the incident, they gathered a huge mob and created a ruckus. They damaged around 10 buses and finally torched a DTC bus waiting at the terminal. Meanwhile, a call to the police control room was made and police reached the spot immediately, said a cop.

The crowd soon dispersed once police was there and the errant bus driver, Manoj Kumar (25), was arrested by the police and booked under relevant sections of the IPC, said a source. He further said, fire department was also informed about the incident and several tenders were rushed to the spot.
