Woman raped in Ghaziabad mall

In the early hours of Friday, a 25-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped by two boys in the underground car parking at the Mahagun Metro Mall. The mall, which is situated in Vaishali, is known to attract a posh crowd. This incident has again brought into focus the poor state of women’s safety in Delhi and NCR.

‘The woman underwent a medical examination to confirm rape. The reports are yet to come. But as per the victim’s allegations, one of the accused was detained,’ said a senior police officer.

According to the police officer, the woman, along with her friend, had gone to a nightclub in EDM mall where she was introduced to two men. They hung out at the nightclub till four in the morning after which they went to the nearby Mahagun Mall. But when they reached the underground parking, as per the victim’s allegation, the two boys raped her in the car in front of the victim’s friend.

The victim had lodged a complaint against the two boys immediately. According to the complaint that she placed, while she was raped, her friend was held hostage at gunpoint, to prevent her from shouting. The incident happened in a Scorpio. There were no CCTV cameras available in the parking area.

The manager of Mahagun Mall alleged that the victim was not being entirely truthful. According to him, if she was gang-raped, as she alleged, in a car that was parked in the basement, the guards would have been alerted as there were not many cars parked at such an early hour. He claimed that the medical reports would soon clarify the whole incident.

When asked about the unavailability of CCTV cameras in an underground parking, the manager said that the cameras are in the process of being installed.
