Woman killed in front of minor son

A 32-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by an unidentified assailant while she was going to drop her four-year-old son to a play school in Rohini area on Tuesday morning. The victim was a boutique owner.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Meenakshi Rana, was on a rickshaw along with her son Manshu when the unidentified assailant stopped his motorcycle in front of her. Rana was then forced to get off the rickshaw and a brief heated argument took place between the assailant and Rana.

As Rana walked off the scene, the assailant followed her and later pumped three bullets into her body before fleeing the spot.

A call to the cops was made by the rickshaw puller around 8.45 am. From initial investigations, the cops suspect that the brother of ex-wife of the victim’s husband’ may be involved in the incident.  He has been identified as Naveen.

‘We are sure that someone known to the victim is behind the incident as there was no other motive,’ the cops said.

‘The manner in which Meenakshi was speaking to the accused suggests that they knew each other,’ said an eyewitness.

Rana lived with her husband Parwinder and son at B-Block in Rohini Sector 16. Eyewitnesses claimed that Meenakshi was seen leaving the spot after a while, but the man kept following her.

He fired three shots in the air and subsequently shot three at Meenakshi. The man then fled  on his motorcycle.

‘Meenakshi died on the spot. A crime team also inspected the spot. We are investigating the matter from personal enmity angle,’ said Mohammad Akhtar Rizvi, additional deputy commissioner of police (Outer).

‘Meenakshi was shot in her head, chest and abdomen. The body will be handed over to her family after post-mortem on Wednesday,’ the official said.

A case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code has been lodged at K N Katju Marg police station. Family members of Meenakshi alleged that family of her husband Parwinder’s first wife may be involved in the attack.

Parwinder told police that they had been receiving threatening calls from Ritu’s brother Naveen, who hails from Haryana’s Sonepat district. Meenakshi and Parwinder had been married for the last seven years, even as Parwinder was fighting a court case with Ritu in Sonepat.

Meenakshi and Parwinder had shifted to their B-Block residence in Rohini Sector 16 earlier this month. They had been residing at F-Block in Rohini Sector 16 since their marriage. While Meenakshi ran a boutique at her home, Parwinder has a small transport business.
