Woman hangs herself over dowry demands

A 19-year-old married woman, who was subjected to dowry harassment allegedly hanged herself to death at her in-laws’ house in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area on May 1. Her husband and her mother-in-law have been arrested, police said on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Rakhi, who was married to a person named Sajjan on February 15. Sajjan and his mother, Kamlesh have been arrested by the police. They were booked under Sections 304B (death caused by harassment) and 498A (cruelty caused to woman by in-laws) of IPC, said a police official.

According to the police, Rakhi’s in-laws called up her father, Rajeshwar Paswan, in the wee hours on Friday and informed him that Rakhi had allegedly hanged herself to death from a ceiling fan.
