Woman duped by fake insurance agent

A 68-year-old woman was duped of cash and jewellery worth Rs 2 lakh after a man posing as Life Insurance Corporation of India agent came to her house at Karol Bagh in central Delhi and asked for Rs 2 lakh security to release a fund of Rs 9.5 lakh, reportedly deposited by her late husband.

Sudershan Kaur then approached Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station  on Saturday and said an unidentified man duped her. Kaur, who lives alone, said, ‘On Saturday, at 8 am, when I returned home from the market, a man was standing outside my house looking for me.’

She said the man, aged 40-45 years, said he wanted to speak to her regarding maturity of an LIC policy of Rs 9.28 lakh,, which was bought by her late husband, Harikishan Dua.

Kaur allowed her inside and the man said her policy had matured and he  needed a surety of Rs 2 lakh to give her the policy cheque, police said. She gave Rs 17,000 in cash and handed over  jewellery worth Rs 1.75 lakh. ‘As I gave him the cash and jewellery, he asked for an identity proof, for which I went to another room. When I returned, he was nowhere,’ she told police. Police have registered a case under Section 420 (cheating) of Indian Penal Code and have started investigation.
