Woman accidentally clicks on vulgar post, kills self after being taunted

A state government employee committed suicide after co-workers started to insult her over obscene videos – which accidentally opened on her Facebook profile.

The traumatised woman, who was reportedly unaware about how those videos appeared in her Facebook wall, complained the matter with Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), Bangaon, North 24 Parganas, but the authorities allegedly paid no heed to her.

The woman, an employee of the SDO office, was found hanging in her bedroom on November 12, along with the suicide note describing her nerve-wracking experience. Following the complaint from the victim’s husband, North 24 Parganas Police detained and interrogated four persons including a woman.

These four persons, who reportedly teased the woman time and again over the video issue also tried to defend themselves saying that the video was tagged in victim’s Facebook profile by somebody unknown to her. They only mocked over the issue without any intention of harming her.

The investigating officers, however, examined the Facebook profile, as cyber crime specialists were called up. “Her husband said that some office colleagues started to taunt her by passing lewd comments at her. She could not stand those insulting behaviour and used to weep alone. One day her husband discovered her crying. She was reluctant to divulge the fact, but later came out with the truth,” said an investigating officer.

The next day, her husband accompanied her to the SDO’s office. They could not meet SDO there, but lodged the complaint with the officers of treasury section. Later, SDO Sudip Mukherjee was conveyed the matter. Mukherjee called up the woman and his husband to know the details. He assured to take steps, but allegedly did not do anything to rescue the woman from the situation.

The woman then reached out to the workers union to explain her daily ordeal. The members of the workers union promised her to take stringent steps against those workers. But they also did not fulfil their commitments.

“The woman stopped going to office and fell ill. Her husband was almost helpless, but feared to go to the police station. The woman committed suicide on November 12,” said the investigating officer.
Meanwhile, the friend list of the facebook of victim woman is being checked by the investigators.
