‘I received no rewards or benefits after the Tandoor murder case, despite being harassed by the Delhi police department in various ways,’ said, Abdul Nazir Kunju, who was then a constable posted at Connaught Place police station. Kunju was on night duty on the intervening night of 2 and 3 July 1995, who saw smoke coming out from Bagya Restaurant where Naina Sahni’s body was being disposed by her husband Sushil Sharma.
Abdul said, ‘On 2 July, I had applied for a two-day leave to see my wife, who had delivered a daughter a day ago. But the SHO cancelled the leave application and extended my duty hours due to the demolition of a building in the area. As a result, home guard Chanderpal and I were patrolling the area. We saw smoke coming out from the ground floor of the restaurant and tried to contact the fire department but failed due to signal problems. However, we eventually managed to inform local police and the fire department.’
‘A special promotion was given to me after my role in prosecuting Sharma and I was made head constable. I got a hike of Rs 5. In 2005, when 6th Pay Commission was set up and the salaries of the government employees were revised, unfortunately my salary got cut down.
Not only this, but my juniors started getting much salary as compared to me,’ he said in a choked voice.
