With style and harmony, city celebrates the festival

Effigies of Ravana were burnt and people cutting across religious communities exchanged sweets and greetings as national capital on Wednesday joined the nation in celebrating the festival of Dussehra.

Effigies of Ravana, his brother Kumbhkaran and son Meghnadh were burnt and fire crackers set off at different places as scores of people watched.

Crowds thronged popular Ramlila venues like the Lav-Kush and Shri Nav Dharmik Lila Committees in old Delhi and the Shri Ramlila Committee in Punjabi Bagh area of the city to catch the final episode of the dramatic re-enactment of the life of Lord Rama.

President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi were among the dignitaries to witness the burning of the effigy of Ravana, symbol of evil, at the Dussehera celebrations at Subhash Maidan near the historic Red Fort.

A tight security arrangement was made around places where the effigies were burnt.

A number of effigies were also soaked by rains as a thunderstorm had hit the city and many areas on Tuesday.

Vice President Hamid Ansari, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna and union communications minister and local MP Kapil Sibal were also present at the function organised by the Sri Dharmik Leela Committee. A large number of people also attended the celebrations.

‘The special effects were too good, especially the fire coming out of Ravan’s mouth,’ said an ecstatic 14-year-old Shaan Dogra watching the spectacle organised by the Lav-Kush Ramlila Committee.

‘Special effects were an integral part of the ceremony this year. The effigies emitted fire from the mouth and their ornaments changed colours as they were set on fire,’ said Arjun Kumar, secretary, Lav-Kush Ramlila Committee.

On the 10th day of the historic Ramlila at the Ramlila ground, Ajmeri Gate, Vijay Dashmi was celebrated with piety and fervour. Thousands of spectators watched with attention the fierce battle between Lord Ram-Lakshman and Ravan which eventually led to the killing of Ravan.

Then huge effigies of Ravan, Meghnath and Kumbhkarn and the colourful lighting, floats and ambience kept the huge number of spectators entertained. Before the effigies were set alight, there were colourful fireworks which kept the grown ups and the kids enthralled.

The office-bearers of the organising committee presented special souvenirs, depicting the episode of Ramlila, to Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi.

The chief patron of the Ramlila organising committee Jai Prakash Agarwal, MP, who is also the president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, in his brief address, said Vijay Dashmi symbolised victory of the good over the evil and truth over falsehood.
