‘Winnable’ councillors will get tickets for assembly election: Vijay Goel

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel said on Friday that ‘winnable’ councillors of civic bodies will be awarded tickets in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections. Though Goel did not specify the number of councillors who would receive Assembly poll tickets, his announcement was received with cheers by the councillors as BJP had not fielded a single councillor for the Assembly polls held in 2008.

‘We will give tickets those  councillors of the civic bodies who have the ability to win.

Venerability would be the main criterion for ticket distribution in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections,’ said Vijay Goel. The BJP decision to not field a single councillor for the 2008 Assembly elections had led to resentment among members. Goel, however, avoided specifying the exact number of tickets reserved for councillors in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

According to party sources, around seven to ten sitting councillors have emerged as strong contenders for the tickets from various Assembly segments this time. Among the strong contenders for the Assembly poll tickets from South DMC are- mayor Sarita Choudhary from the Mehrauli constituency, standing committee chairman Rajesh Gehlot from Matiala and leader of House Subhash Arya from Rajouri Garden. In North DMC, former standing committee chairman Yogender Chandolia is lobbying hard for a ticket from Karolbagh or Patel Nagar, and leader of House Mahendera Nagpal is eyeing a ticket for Wazirpur.

The name of Vijay Prakash Pandey, chairman of environment committee is also being considered from the Poorvanchal-dominated legislative segment of Badli.

In East DMC, the names of the leader of the house B B Tyagi from Laxmi Nagar and former chairman of standing committee Mahek Singh from Mustafabad or Ghonda are being considered seriously.

Former mayor of Delhi, Rajni Abbi from Timarpur and former mayor of North DMC Mira Aggarwal from Tri Nagar are also among the probable candidates for Assembly poll ticket.

Radhey Shyam Sharma who had emerged as a strong contender for the post of mayor in South DMC is now seeking ticket from R K Puram for the Assembly polls. Besides the councillors, others pitching for tickets in the Delhi Assembly election are- Jitender Singh Shanty from Shahdara, Devender Singh from Patpargunj, J P Sharma from Uttam Nagar, Ramesh Mohan Chauhan from Burari, North DMC mayor Azad Singh from Mundka, and East DMC chairman of standing committee Sanjay Surjan from Rohtas Nagar.
