Will Smriti Irani stand against Sheila Dikshit?

Despite the Delhi unit of the BJP being in disarray due to intense infighting, it has not dissipated the spirits of some central leaders to parachute themselves as the chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming assembly polls.

While names of some leaders from Bihar like the party’s deputy leader in Rajya Sabha Ravi Shankar Prasad, general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy and spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain were already doing the rounds as contenders for the top post, the latest entrant is BJP vice president and Rajya Sabha member Smriti Irani.

BJP leaders say Irani has been pushing her candidature stating that she, unlike other parachute leaders, belongs to Delhi and has a Punjabi background.
According to BJP leaders, the other important reason that Irani cites in favour of her own candidature is that she is a woman and this will work for her as she will be contesting against Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit. ‘Smriti Irani is articulate and this will work to her advantage,’ said a BJP leader.
