Will release funds for EDMC workers’ salaries: Sisodia

“We have decided to release the money for the salaries of sanitation workers of East Delhi. Soon, they will get their salaries,” said Sisodia addressing a press briefing at the Delhi Secretariat.

The direction came following a meeting of the delegation of the MCD safaikaramcharis with the Chief Minister’s office at the Delhi Secretariat.

Announcing the government decision, Deputy Chief Minister Sisodia said that on the first day of the new financial year, the Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal directed immediate release of funds to ensure payment of outstanding salaries of the safaikaramcharis, who have been suffering due to rampant corruption and inefficiency in their corporations.

Sisodia said that the Central government should also now rise above political considerations and immediately release the funds for the Delhi government, which will transfer these funds to the MCDs.

“The government will direct the three corporations to ensure immediate payment of outstanding salaries to the safaikaramcharis and it should also be ensured that they get their salaries at the beginning of every month and not towards the end,” said Sisodia.

The sanitation workers of the EDMC had recently staged protests against the delay in their salaries. As part of the protest, the workers had not only refused to clean the streets, but dumped garbage at various locations across the city.

Sisodia also said that the money will be used only for the purpose of salaries and not other works of the sanitation workers. Asked about the amount to be released by the government for the purpose, Sisodia said that he is yet to fix the amount and the work is in progress.

“Within two-three days, people will get to know about the figure too,” Sisodia said.

They apprised the Chief Minister about the health facilities, informing that the MCDs have only two hospitals in their panels, where treatment is allowed. The karamcharis also said that one of the hospitals in the panel is St Stephens hospital, where an advance of Rs 50,000/ has to be paid for treatment.

The Chief Minister said that a letter to all the three Commissioners and the Lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung will also be written to direct corporations to issue cashless health cards for the safaikaramcharis.

Safaikarmis continue stir
Despite the announcement of calling off the six-day long strike by the safaikarmis (sanitation workers) on Tuesday, a section of the employees went ahead and dumped heaps of garbage in the middle of streets in posh areas in angst against the corporation. While some of the employees have received salaries for the month of February, a chunk of agitated workers, who are yet to get their wages, took to the streets to demand their delayed salaries for both the months.

As per reports, areas like Model Town, Shashtri Nagar and few other areas witnessed piles of garbage in the middle of the roads. Officials of the corporation said that while most employees have received their salaries and a sizeable amount will soon get it, as the salaries have yet not been credited into their account. The North MCD mayor Yogender Chandolia appealed to the workers to resume work and to work for the betterment of the citizens. He also added that the corporation will write to the Union Home Ministry and seek help in this regard.

However, a number of the safaikaramcharis of East Delhi Municipal Corporation on Wednesday resumed work after a six-day long strike in protest against delayed salaries.
