‘Will not permit riots under any circumstance’

The West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, said that she will not permit rioting in the state under any circumstances and called for investigating the reasons behind the police firing at Tehatta that claimed one life on 14 November. The Chief Minister reacted for the first time to the Tehatta incident at a public function in Kolkata on Friday.
‘It is not a small incident. Why did the police firing take place at all? Which party did the victim belong to? One will have to investigate what went behind the scenes at Tehatta. Things are being exaggerated beyond proportion,’ said Banerjee. The state govt transferred the Officer-in-Charge of theTehatta police station and also announced compensation to the victim's family on Friday.
The Home Secretary Basudeb Banerjee also announced a magisterial inquiry into the incident at Writers Buildings on Friday. He also announced that the victim’s family would get a compensation of Rs 2 lakh and also a job.
