Ansuman Pattnaik, the additional director of criminal investigation unit of IT department, who was heading the probe against Qureshi from the beginning, has been shifted to Competition Commission of India. According to government sources, Pattnaik had himself applied for the transfer which was granted. But insiders feel Pattnaik’s removal from the sensitive investigation at this juncture jeopardises the probe in a big way.
Qureshi was accused of playing the role a middleman in a number of sensitive CBI cases due to his proximity to former CBI director AP Singh as well as a number of powerful Congress ministers and political secretaries. He was accused of diverting thousands of crores of rupees to various bank accounts in different foreign countries for which the IT department has already sought details through diplomatic channels. IT department suspects these huge sums of money don’t belong to Qureshi and he holds them on behalf of ‘powerful’ people.
During the election campaign, Narendra Modi had alleged that Qureshi had close links with 10, Janpath and promised proper investigation if the BJP came to power. Millennium Post broke the story of Qureshi’s link with the erstwhile CBI director on 21 February, 2014.

After an IT department raid was carried out, Qureshi’s phone was kept under surveillance and controversial BBM messages between him and AP Singh surfaced. IT department also sent notice to AP Singh soon after.
On 5 May, Millennium Post reported that the role of the current CBI director was also under scrutiny by the IT department and according to a report by DNA newspaper, the visitors’ diary of Ranjit Sinha’s home at 2, Janpath has shown the dubious meat exporter had visited him 90 times in 15 months. Sometimes, Qureshi visited Sinha along with his wife Nasreen Qureshi, often twice in a single day.
What is surprising is that even after 21 February, when Millennium Post broke the story, Ranjit Sinha continued to extend his hospitality to this scamster at his residence. And now, the removal of the additional director Pattnaik from the investigation has raised serious doubts about the intention of this government to take the probe to its logical end.
Meanwhile, the controversial former CBI director AP Singh continues as a UPSC member and enjoys the benefits of a luxurious bungalow in the Capital’s plush Lutyens’ zone. Ranjit Sinha, who himself sought evidence against Qureshi from the IT department, was refused. But the government of the day is also not forthcoming with any statement about the progress of the investigation.
