After the Supreme Court judgement canceling 214 coal blocks, the question is being raised why the court has spared another ‘scamster’ Anil Ambani. In the name of producing cheap power, the Anil Ambani group is sitting over a coal reserve of nearly 1.5 billion tonnes which they claim as surplus coal and which they got absolutely free of cost.
They got this block in the name of Sasan power project where they are just planning to run a single unit. For the other project Tilaiya, no power unit is coming up right now.
Experts in the coal sector suspect current power minister Piyush Goyal of bypassing strong opposition from coal ministry officials pushing for utilisation of so-called surplus coal which CAG had earlier declared as wrongful gain to the Anil Ambani group to the tune of Rs 30,000 crore. When all other coal licenses are cancelled, insiders suspect that Anil Ambani would be pushing for commercial mining and will make a gain of more than Rs one lakh crore if he is allowed to sell this coal at commercial rates.
Incidentally, Anil Ambani group is already named in the 2G scam. What should also be mentioned here is that former attorney general Goolam Essaji Vahanvati, during the UPA rule, mentioned in court that coal block allocations should be cancelled. The relationship between Vahanvati and Anil Ambani was considered to be very close.
