What plagues the planet?

While the world’s eco-system totters on the brink of a potential disaster, it is always food for thought to take a few moments out and look at the very creatures and landscapes that we might lose forever if we aren’t careful. And at such an optimal time comes in Quotes from the Earth, a two-day environmental film festival that looks into the pitfalls and challenges being faced by the planet.

Animals and landscapes become charatcers in the movies as they narrate their tales on screen.

In it’s fifth edition, Quotes from the Earth is all about the subtle poignancies that plague the planet. The film festival has been drawing its audience since 2004, taking place every alternate year.

The festival will screen of 25 films, with a separate section of films from  various countries including the US, France, Australia and Germany. Films by environmental filmmakers like Bedi Brothers, Mike Pandey, Krishnendu Bose, Rita Banerji, Christopher Walker and David Fedele among other big names are also a part of the festival which will witness screening of 25 films, with a separate section on International Films.

Ravi Agarwal, Director, Toxics Link and curator of Quotes From The Earth, says: ‘This is the fifth edition and the festival’s prominence has grown each year. From 18 films in 2004, we now have 25 films. The films this year throw light on four categories of environmental concerns — earth, water, wildlife and sustainability. All the 25 films have been made in the last two years and hence focus on the most current environmental issues.’

Films are from various genres including animations to documentaries are a a part of Quotes of the Earth. They deal with contemporary issues such as man-animal conflicts, threats to lakes, river contamination, impact of mining, struggles to preserve tropical forest, dams and water crisis, vanishing biodiversity, forest conservation, dangers of pesticide etc.

The films and discussions will aim to provide a discursive platform to highlight the ecological debates and challenges faced at the national and international level. A panel discussion with eminent academicians, activists, media persons and filmmakers is followed by the screening of the films on  current debates.

‘Since its inception, the focus and aim of the film festival has been of awareness creation and to create an informed discussion on the issues. It is strictly a non-commercial venture,’ says Ravi.

Some of the films scheduled to be screened at Quotes of the Earth are Tiger Dynasty, The Jungle Gang, Gaur In My Garden, Aanchar – A Lost Ecological Heritage, A Dam Old Story, Flowing Forever and more.
