What is Digvijay defending?

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh has always been political loose cannon. He has never believed in controlling his truant tongue, it having led to many a case in which his tirades against Congress-baiters have come as an embarrassment for the party. Congress has not always defended him but they have not always felt comfortable with his vitriol either. His latest is full of innuendos and the Congress has likewise stayed away from it. In an interview to a television news channel, Singh has said, to quote news reports, ‘There were a lot of things that came out during the NDA regime. But did the Congress party ever use any of those? If I say, I do not have it [evidence against kin of Advani and Vajpayee], it is not correct’. This, statement, in short means that the Congress is in possession of evidence against the kith and kin of NDA stalwart Advani and Vajpayee, but did not use it to nail the leaders. The obvious question is why?

Isn’t it stupid to say that the Congress, itself troubled relentlessly by accusations of corruption, has let go of all the firepower that solid evidence brings in against acts of graft against its chief and bitter rival? Is the Congress practicing some self serving Gandhigiri? Or it a mutual understanding – that when the names of the leaders are in the known to  each other in graft cases, then whatever be the nature of crime, they will be given a safe passage? Either way, one must find out what exactly Singh is hinting at. If he is saying that the Congress has the evidence and did not proceed against the BJP leaders, is he implying that the BJP should similarly not partake in the new controversy that has engulfed Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra? In that case, there is clear hint that Vadra is guilty of corruption, preferential treatment and other act of pilferage and yet the BJP must not make too much sound lest it is caught with similar charges. What kind of quid pro-quo is that? Who exactly is Singh defending? Or is he giving away too much trying to defend all of them. If Vadra is not guilty what does it have to do with BJP? Singh’ contention is that the political leaders across parties and their kin have all the right to do whatever they can with public money, resources and utility but they are bound by a secret, incestuous agreement to defend each other when in crisis. We are surely entering a new  era of political culpability.  Perhaps Singh and Congress acolytes like him to do realise that the more they try to stand proxy for Vadra’s innocence, the more is he likely to receive egg on his face and that of the family he is married to.
