WFP grants aid to Lanka war displaced

The World Food Programme (WFP) is to extend the duration of the existing food aid assistance worth near USD 28 million.

The Sri Lanka Cabinet on Wednesday granted approval to sign the Letters of Understanding for the purpose with the World Food Programme, the Cabinet spokesman and minister Keheliya Rambukwella said.

Under this, the Protracted Relief and Recovery Operation (PRRO) programme in Sri Lanka would be extended until 2012.

The objective of this programme is to assist the Sri Lanka government in its efforts to restore the livelihood and re-settlement activities of the displaced persons in the northern and eastern provinces. Near 300,000 civilians in the former battle zones were displaced in the last stages of the conflict three years ago.

They come from areas where demining became slow in carrying out.

The programme would be implemented in Mannar, Mulativu, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi and Jaffna Districts in the northern province and selected areas in the eastern province.

The estimated number of beneficiaries of this programme would be about 176,000 people.
