The unpredictable weather is the biggest challenge for the Uttarakhand government, with the ‘Char Dham Yatra’ slated to begin from April 24.
If the weather becomes normal by the next week, there is a danger of avalanche or breaking of glacier in the mountains. Bereft of Doppler radar, it will be difficult for the local MET department to warn residents and tourists.
However, the state government claims that it is ready to face any calamity.
It is mid-April and Kedarnath is covered with 7-8 feet fresh snow, which is rare. For the past three days, it is snowing and raining in the area, especially after 2pm. Despite this, workers of the National Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) are working round-the-clock to clear the trek path. This time, SDRF team will also be deployed.
Leader of Opposition in state Assembly, Ajay Bhatt said, “The Char Dham Yatra has lost its sheen for the last two years. We want to regain its glory by inviting more people to all pilgrim centers. That’s why we are sending our teams to all four pilgrim centers to submit our report to the Centre. We are doing our duty as main opposition party in the state, then why is the state government is objecting it.”
