Delhi police is looking into complaints of students that they were molested and verbally abused by some people when they were protesting against the visit of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi here recently.
The students have complained that the people, who were trying to prevent their protest, misbehaved with them at the entrance of Sri Ram College of Commerce on Wednesday evening when Modi was addressing students inside the institute.
They also alleged in their complaints that some of them were molested by men who were present at the protest site.
Hundreds of students had protested against the visit of Modi on Wednesday. Police had to use force to disperse them.
‘We have received a lot of complaints and we are looking into all of them,’ DCP (North) Sindhu Pillai said.
Asked whether any case has been registered, Pillai said, ‘No case has been registered as of yet.’
Protesters also alleged that police turned a blind eye to the harassment that took place at the site.
DUTA CONDEMNS COPS
Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) has condemned, in strongest terms, Delhi police action against students and teachers who had assembled outside SRCC to protest against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s visit. Amar Deo Sharma, president of DUTA, said, ‘Delhi police constables deployed outside SRCC were seen to be making lewd and sexist remarks. Instead of admitting its failure to rein in the renegade constables, who led the charge against the hapless students and teachers, Delhi police has proceeded to book eight students and a teacher on charges of rioting and causing damage to public property.’
He added, ‘While Delhi police is responsible for the violent attack, Delhi University and college authorities have also failed to ensure that people are allowed to express themselves freely and fairly. The attempt to quash the non-violent protests through water-cannons and lathi-charge demonstrates that Delhi police and university authorities lacked sensitivity and confidence to handle the protests in a mature way.’
