We may be poor, but not beggars: Mamata

Announcing an economic package for Maoist-affected Purulia is how the West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee flagged off her campaign for the upcoming panchayat polls in the state from Purulia.

‘We will give you more loans, will construct roads and arrange for jobs for your sons and daughters. Don’t support those who had once established a rule of terror in your locality ,’ Mamata told a public gathering at Hutmura in the Purulia district of West Bengal.

Referring to the panchayat polls, Banerjee said that her government had reserved 50 per cent of the seats for women. ‘Women can achieve success in all spheres if they so want. You must work hard’, she said.

Banerjee is on a three-day tour to the Maoist-infested Jangalmahal. During her hour-long speech, Mamata also raised the issue of Centre-state rivalry due to political differences between the Congress and the Trinamool Congress. ‘The Centre is trying to deprive the state of funds. They have cancelled a proposal for setting up a homeopathic medical college in the Purulia district. We don’t need any help from the Centre,’ Mamata told the crowd. ‘The Centre wants that we die of hunger. But as long we are in power in the state, we will not let that happen. We may be poor, but not beggars,’ she further said.
