We give you enough, Haryana tells Delhi

While Delhi was crying itself hoarse that the neighbouring state has cut its water supply, Haryana claimed on Sunday that it was releasing double its legitimate share of water to the national capital.

Anand Kumar, chief engineer of Yamuna Water Services, Haryana Irrigation Department in Delhi, said Delhi's legitimate share of water is 610 cusecs at Munak and 610 cusecs of water is being released to the Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant. In addition to this, Kumar said, more than 600 cusecs of water was being released from Munak to Chandrawal/Wazirabad Water Treatment Plants.

He also claimed that water released for Chandrawal/Wazirabad Water Treatment Plants this year was about 175 cusecs more than last year.

Kumar also lamented that Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has 'stooped very low' by cutting the water supply to residential premises at 3, Sham Nath Marg, and 3, Under Hill Road, in Civil Lines, Delhi, where more than 60 families of Haryana Irrigation Department officials reside.

He said it is strange that water supply is available in the adjoining colonies as well as in the office of Divisional Commissioner and Collector, but not at 3, Sham Nath Marg, and 3, Under Hill Road.

Kumar said for better coordination with Delhi and for taking any corrective measure immediately, if required, Haryana has also constituted three to four teams, which would be available at Haiderpur, Wazirabad and Chandrawal Water Treatment Plants.

Meanwhile, even though various areas in the capital continue to reel under acute water shortage, DJB officials claimed that things were getting better after Haryana's irrigation secretary K K Jalan made an unscheduled visit to water treatment plants in Delhi on Saturday.

Apparently, the pondage level of water at Wazirabad, which is at 672 ft against the normal 674.5, convinced him about gravity of the situation. 'The Haryana government has taken corrective steps resulting in an improvement in the level at Wazirabad water treatment plant,' said Satpal, spokesperson in Delhi Chief Minister's office.

The pondage water level at Wazirabad had remained at 672 ft during last week resulting in the drastic curtailment in water supply. Even a fall by a foot in the level reduces generation by 20 to 30 MGD and also affects the functioning of the WTP and pumping supply.

'Haryana is now releasing more water and water level at Wazirabad and Haiderpur water treatment plants (WTP) is now increasing gradually,' said Sanjam Chima, spokesperson of DJB.

PMO ASKS DELHI, HARYANA TO RESOLVE CRISIS AMICABLY

With Delhi reeling under severe water shortage due to cut in raw water supply by Haryana, the Prime Minister’s office has asked chief ministers of both states to resolve the issue amicably.

‘The Prime Minister’s Office has asked both the Chief Minister’s to resolve the issue amicably through talks,’ a top Delhi government official said.

As water crisis deepened in the city, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday seeking his intervention in making Haryana release adequate quantity of water to Delhi.

Following the PMO directive, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and her Haryana counterpart Bhupinder Singh Hooda will hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss the issue, the official said.

Areas across Delhi have been grappling with acute shortage of water for last four days as production of water at treatment plants in the city has come down sharply due to shortage of raw water.

Agitated over Haryana cutting supply of water to Delhi, the city government had accused the neighbouring state of playing ‘foul’ with it and was even contemplating going to courts. Haryana government has, however, rejected the allegations.

The war of words between the two neighbouring states intensified on Sunday with Haryana claiming that it is releasing double the Delhi’s legitimate share of water to them.

Haryana also accused the neighbouring state of snapping the water supply of a residential premises in the national capital, where some families of Haryana Irrigation Department are residing.

On the other hand, a statement from Dikshit’s office said, Haryana’s Irrigation Secretary K K Jalan yesterday visited Wazirabad and Haiderpur water treatment plants in the city without informing the Delhi Jal Board.

It said the official came to know about the ground realities after visiting the plants and the Wazirabad pond from where the plants draw raw water.
