WB Congress slams Mamata move

The rift between the West Bengal Congress and chief minister Mamata Banerjee seems to be growing wider. The WBPCC leaders slammed Banerjee’s decision to reject the Union finance minister Pranab Mukherjee’s name for the President’s post and instead proposing the names of prime minister Manmohan Singh, former president APJ Abdul Kalam and former speaker Somnath Chatterjee for the same.

Earlier, Banerjee had also suggested the name of the ex-Governor of Bengal, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, and the speaker of Lok Sabha Meira Kumar as probable candidates.

A disappointed WB Congress chief Pradeep Bhattacharya said, ‘We are extremely disappointed. She cannot be serious about proposing the prime minister’s name. The Congress high command will take the final call on this. [Mamata] has hurt the sentiments of Bengal. Pranab was the fittest candidate for the chair. A lot of drama will unfold now after this trick.’

‘We did not expect this. Only Mamata knows what she will do next. But as for Pranab’s candidature, she did not want to back him from the beginning,’ Debabrata Basu, vice president, WBPCC, told Millennium Post.

Another senior Congress leader Manas Bhuniya said, ‘It is [Mulayam and Mamata’s] decision.’

Bhuniya, the irrigation minister, said, ‘As a Congress worker, I had appealed to [Mamata] to support Mukherjee who is a pride of India and also comes from Bengal.’
