Wazirpur: NGT acts tough against units operating without consent

In its bid for clean environment in the national Capital, the green panel has come down heavily on the polluting stainless steel units in Wazirpur here for releasing toxic wastes in the Yamuna, and asked the authorities to shut down 17 such factories if they are not following the norms.

The National Green Tribunal bench chaired by Justice Swatanter Kumar has ordered Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) to take strict action against the stainless steel pickling units located at Wazirpur.

On a plea filed by All India Lokadhikar Sangathan, the tribunal asked the committee to immediately shut down units that are not complying with the tribunal orders and still releasing toxics in the Yamuna. The units are not only causing environmental problems but also leading to health hazards for the people.

The tribunal has named 17 units and the list includes Mittul Industries, Kasturi Steel Industries, Pradeep Industries and Paras Steel among others. Wazirpur Industrial Area houses about 2,000 units. Most of them are steel pickling units.  “This order has come as a respite to River Yamuna, which is being polluted by harmful chemicals used by these pickling units,” said Girish Kumar Pandey, president of All India Lokadhikar Sangathan. “We are also planning to meet Uma Bharti, Union cabinet minister for water resources and will bring this matter to her attention and will seek her intervention in cleaning the Yamuna.”
