Mominul Haque smashed a half-century to help Bangladesh recover from the quick loss of two wickets and reach 103/2 at stumps on the second day of the first Test on Thursday.
In response to New Zealand’s first inning’s 469, Bangladesh made a sluggish start but Haque’s stormy batting brought Bangladesh back on track, although still trailing by 366 runs.
Bangladesh lost its two openers by the fourth over, with Tamim Iqbal going for a duck and Anamul Haque on 3. Mominul amassed 77 off 13 boundaries while his partner Marshall Aiyub was unbeaten on 21. Brendon McCullum used six bowlers but Mominul continued to batter them amid cheers from a few thousand Bangladeshi supporters at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
For New Zealand, BJ Watling scored his second Test century and added 127 runs with Trent Boult in their last-wicket stand. Bangladesh took five wickets on the day to dismiss New Zealand, which resumed on 280-5. Boult contributed 52 runs for the Kiwis. Watling survived after being caught off a delivery from Rubel Hossain because of a no-ball when he was on four, but he went on to score 103 off 182 balls.
Part-time left-armer Mominul Haque dismissed Watling, stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim. Watling and Boult dominated Bangladesh for more than a session after New Zealand lost their ninth wicket in the morning for 342 runs. However, New Zealand’s progress stopped when Watling fell 10 minutes into an extended second session.
Watling’s total came off 182 balls with six boundaries and two sixes. Boult’s 52 featured four boundaries and three sixes from 137 balls. Earlier, Bruce Martin (1) departed in the first over.
