The month of April has just set in and temperature has already crossed 40 degrees Celsius in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). People are finding it difficult to step outside their houses in this scorching heat. The situation is equally difficult for the city’s stray animals, who are often left unattended and hardly any arrangement for water and shelter is made for them.
But People For Animals (PFA), an NGO, has started a unique initiative for stray animals in Delhi and neighbourhood. The PFA is installing huge water tubs in many areas of Delhi and NCR. These tubs, filled with water, will help animals and birds quench their thirst.
The PFA had started this initiative in Faridabad last year as many stray dogs had died due to dehydration. It had installed over 50 water tubs in the city last summer. Overwhelmed with the good response, PFA has broadened is now installing water tubs in Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida.
“The design of the water tubs is similar to bath tubs. Each tub, measuring 5x2.5 ft, is made of cement and can contain around 200 litres of water. The cost of each water tub is around Rs 1,800. We are installing these tubs on request by residents. These tubs are installed for free in Faridabad, but in Delhi, Gurgaon or Noida, residents of a colony have to pay the transpiration cost,” said Ravi Dubey, founder/ president of PFA-Faridabad.
He added that since April 2, we have started installing water tubs in the national Capital and have received over 15 requests within the last 24 hours. Residents in posh South Delhi colonies have also requested us to install water tubs in their areas for stray animals.
Moreover, a woman from Singapore has contacted the PFA and expressed her desire that six water tubs be installed at her permanent residence in Gurgaon.
The person who requests us to install a water tub is responsible for maintaining it. The maintenance include filling it with fresh water, cleaning the tub regularly, re-filling the water once a week. If the person fails to maintain the water tub, the PFA will remove or re-locate it.
