As the water level in the Yamuna river continued to rise on Wednesday, chief minister Sheila Dikshit visited the relief camps and tried to ensure that the government was geared to tackle any situation.
She visited the relief camps that have been set for the people evacuated from the low-lying areas around Yamuna.
As a precautionary measure, a key bridge over the Yamuna linking the capital with its populous eastern district was shut as the river waters rose menacingly, causing huge traffic jams. The level of water in Yamuna, meanwhile, touched 207.20 metre on Wednesday which is reportedly the highest in the last 35 years. Earlier in 1978, the water level had reached 207.49 metre and in 2010 it touched 207.11 metre.
‘In view of the situation, government has deployed all its personnel and resources for rescue and relief measures. The farmers in river bed areas and the residents of the area have been evacuated and put in various camps,’ Dikshit said.
The chief minister asked people not to panic has the government has taken all necessary steps to protect them and is ready to meet any eventuality.
