The officials of UP irrigation department have said that supply of water to these regions will be stopped between 3 and 24 October, which may result in severe water crisis in both states.
Notably, Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar water plants in Delhi will be worst hit as raw water which comes from Ganga Canal to Ghaziabad, is further supplied to these two plants.
‘The supply will be stopped for some regions including NCR for 21 days and all the departments have been informed about this,’ said a senior official of state irrigation department.
However, the officials of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) said they have not received any information from concerned authorities in this regard. ‘But even if the supply is stopped they will arrange water from other source’, said a DJB official.
The official further said that they have agreement with other neighbouring states. ‘Although we have not received any official information, but if required, we will take water from Yamuna River. We also have arrangements with other neighbouring states,’ said Sanjam Chima, official spokesperson of the DJB.
It may be noted that supply of drinking water to south and northeast Delhi is mainly dependent on Bhagirath and Sonia Vihar plants, located in northeast Delhi.
The farmers in some of the districts of UP are also likely to be affected as they will have to make their own arrangements for irrigating fields.
