Waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur: AAP-Centre heading for a showdown?

A day after Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal suggested that he would review functioning of waste-to-energy plant in Okhla, the Mayor of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC), Meenakshi, visited under construction waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur. The plant has missed four deadlines for becoming functional. The Mayor, after the visit, announced that it would start by March-end. The move of the civic agency, within hours of Kejriwal’s statement, is seen as its position of autonomy.

As per the reports, the Delhi Chief Minister, while meeting with the people of Sukhdev Vihar, had announced to shut down polluting waste-to-energy plant in their neighbourhood.

The residents of Okhla’s Sukhdev Vihar celebrated an imminent victory over the ‘polluting’ unit. The locals, along with several AAP workers, had met the Chief Minister with a petition to shut down the plant.

Residents said Kejriwal agreed to close the plant. “President of the AAP women’s wing in Kalkaji, Huma Hashim, had met Kejriwal along with a few residents and the CM assured them that the plant should be closed,” claimed a resident. During its 49-day tenure, then environment minister of Delhi state, Saurabh Bhardwaj, had also promised action against the plant.

The East MCD, however, on Friday claimed to start power generation from another plant before the end of March as construction work was almost complete.

“With the commencement of the project, the plant will be able to generate 12 MW electricity from the waste of landfill site. The most prestigious project of converting solid waste into energy at Ghazipur will start its trial run in the next month,” said Meenakshi.
