Modi’s bid for manual scavenging-free country by 2019 was one of the important issues that came up for discussions in the BJP’s National Executive meet here. Party workers will be extensively roped in for non-political missions such as Swacch Bharat, clean Ganga and Beti bachao, beti padhao besides the party will also build up support for the Land Acquisition Bill among the farmers.
“It is unfortunate that still there are 23 lakhs families who indulge in manual scavenging. It is a shame for us and today (on Friday) we have taken a pledge to make India a manual scavenging free country,” said Union Minister and party spokesperson, Prakash Javadekar.
Uttar Pradesh is the only state which has given the list of manual scavengers working in its villages and no other state has given the figure. It was decided in the meet that all the states will be asked to help the government in making this initiative a success. Special attention will be given to states like Tamil Nadu, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh.
The number of manual scavengers in these states are high. “We will also ask the states to implement the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, which prohibits employment of manual scavengers and its impact on health,” Javadekar told Millennium Post.
Party chief Amit Shah has decided to involve thousands of party workers in social service. “Our PM (Modi) has said that every time it is not necessary that party workers will focus only on politics. They need to connect with the people through social services. This is the only way to connect with the people. It will be added with Maha Sampark rallies in the coming weeks,” he said. The NE members have pitched for organizing ‘Maha Sampark’ rallies because only increasing number of members through membership drive through mobile phone is not enough.
Already, the party has over 9.25 crore members and with a target to take the figures beyond 10 crore - Prime Minister Narendra Modi felt for a need of ‘Maha Sampark’ rallies. Plans are there to train nearly 15 lakh new members into political activities.
