Want to be a Baccalaureate?

Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), which inspired the title of a novel by RK Narayan, would become a thing of the past from the academic year 2013-14 in Delhi university.

In fact, there shall not be a Bachelor of Commerce (B. Com) or Bachelor of Science (B. Sc) also.  The Delhi University (DU), which would be introducing four-year degree courses from the next academic year, is contemplating to call it  Baccalaureate Honours. Baccalaureate is a French word which means a college bachelor’s degree. For students who decide to not pursue the course beyond two years, it would be called Associate Baccalaureate. Sources said the university was likely to notify the new nomenclature and course structure in a week’s time.

A DU teacher said: ‘The DU task force has proposed to implement its recommendation regarding the nomenclature and the course structure of the graduation to be implemented from 2013-14. The task force suggested the three years graduation degree be converted into four years of Baccalaureate honours.

Students, who due to any reason are not able to complete the third and fourth years, will be given the degree of Associate Baccalaureate.’

Students who complete honours in baccalaureate will be able to do post graduation in just one year. In the second meeting of the task force, these decisions have been contemplated.
