Walk for Life held to honour cancer survivors

Can Support organised their 6th annual walk at India Gate on Sunday with an aim to create awareness about cancer, to raise funds for people affected by cancer and to honour the struggle against cancer.

MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, Harmala Gupta founder President of Can Support, CM Shiela Dikshit, Wife of Prime Minister Gursharan Kaur, MP Brinda Karat and wife of Union Health Minister A K Antony led the walkers. This year, Can Support’s ‘Walk for Life’ witnessed more than 10,000 participants.

Kaur flagged off the colourful event. Celebrities and personalities from public life, cinema, academics, corporate and sports world were present there. Cancer survivors were cheered as they went around on a ‘Lap of Honour’. People walked and ran in memory of loved ones and wrote moving messages on the ‘Wall of Honour’.

An illustrious Military Band display lightened the proceedings. The Grenadiers Regimental Centre Band, led by Subedar Nawab Singh and Naib Subedar Abdul Gani with their team was exemplary and gracious. Fun activities such as tattoo, face painting, mehendi, kept the walkers in good spirits.

Gupta, founder of Can Support, thanked all participants and volunteers.  Gupta, being a cancer survivor herself, believes that palliative care is a neglected field in India, with the focus of government and private hospitals being on treatments that may not be appropriate or affordable.
