Walia lays foundation for health centre in east, says more to come

With Delhi Assembly polls just around the corner, Delhi government is leaving no stone unturned to tend to the needs of its citizens. Health minister A K Walia on Friday laid the foundation stone for a health centre in Shakarpur.

According to Walia, Delhi government will open 12 more hospitals with total bed strength of 2,900 to provide medical facilities in hitherto uncovered areas of the city.  Construction work, hed said, has already begun in Dwarka (750 beds), Vikas Puri (200 beds), Madipur (200 beds), Jawlapuri (200 beds), Ambedkar Nagar (200 beds) and Sarita Vihar (100 beds).  The formalities for construction are underway for the remaining six hospitals.  

‘The health centres at Shakarpur will be constructed within a period of 12 months. It will start functioning soon thereafter, benefitting residents of east Delhi, particularly Shakarpur, Laxmi Nagar, Pandav Nagar, Vikas Marg and adjoining colonies,’ said Walia. The centre will be built at a cost of Rs 8 crore in an area of 2,076 sqm. It will provide OPD consultations, free medicines, basic investigations, child health, immunisation programmes and referral services to the government and 42 major private hospitals for free treatment to poor patients.

According to the health minister, five health centres are under construction in Vasant Gaon, Shiv Vihar, Pandav Nagar and Bindapur.  Delhi government will open eight health centres in Molar Band (Gautam Puri), Madan Pur Khadar, Phase-1 and Phase-2, Rohini  Sec-4 and Sec-21, Gandhi Vihar, Buland Masjid (Shastri Park) and Savda Ghevra. And 12 more dispensaries are being planned for different areas of the city. He further added that land has been acquired from Gram Sabha at Rasulpur, Madanpur  Dabas, Bhaktawarpur, Sahapur Majra, Darya pur Kalan and Harawali.

Speaking on the occasion, MP  Sandeep Dikshit said 15 years ago, there were just 12 government hospitals, but today there are 37. ‘Most of them have acquired name and fame for them and large number of patients come from different parts of the country, especially the neighbouring states, for treatment.’ According to him, east Delhi has been accorded all round development and that some of its colonies are among the best in Delhi.
