Walia cracks whip on 10 private hospitals

Delhi health minister AK Walia on Tuesday cracked whip on leading private hospitals for not treating poor patients as required under the law. Delhi government has issued notices to 10 private hospitals identified for not providing free treatment to poor patients.
The government sent a notice asking, ‘Why should proceedings of contempt of court not be initiated against you for not complying with the directions of the Supreme Court and High Court to provide free treatment to the extent of 10 percent of Indoor Patients (IPD) and 25 percent of total Outdoor Patients (OPD) completely free in all respects to patients belonging to the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) of society.’
The hospitals which have been served with notices are Dharamshila Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Vasundhara Enclave, Escorts Heart Institute & Research Centre, Okhla, Max Super Specialty Hospital (Max Devki Devi Heart & Vascular Institute), Saket,VIMHANS, Nehru Nagar, Gujarmal Modi Hospital, Saket, Primus Super Specialty Hospital, Chankyapuri, Bensups Hospital, Dwarka, RB Seth Jessa Ram Hospital, Dwarka, Rockland Hospital, Qutub Institutional Area and Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj.
According to health department, although the hospitals are required to provide free treatment to the extent of 10 percent of IPD, they failed to comply with even one-third of the required quota. Sources said in most of the hospitals, indoor patient performance was found to be less than 3.3 percent.
Walia said: ‘The government has advised these hospitals to improve their performance in the interest of economically weaker sections of the society and in compliance of the directions of the courts. Hospitals should fulfill their legal as well as social commitments’.
A senior official from health department said, ‘The hospitals have been directed to reply within seven days. In case of their non-compliance, contempt cases will be initiated against these hospitals for violation of court orders.’
