Walcott proves his point

Theo Walcott sent a message to Arsene Wenger as the Arsenal star came off the bench to inspire his side’s 3-1 win at West Ham. Not for the first time this season, Walcott found himself left on the substitutes’ bench, but the England international’s second-half introduction played a key role in Arsenal’s third EPL win of the season.

Mohamed Diame had handed West Ham the lead in the first half before French striker Olivier Giroud ended his EPL goal drought to equalise just before half-time. Walcott, who is yet to sign a new contract after making it clear to Wenger he wants to be used as a forward rather than a winger, came on to put Arsenal ahead with a clinical finish in the second half before Santi Cazorla completed the win late on to lift the Gunners into fifth place.

BAYERN POSTS EASY WIN

A brace by Frenchman Franck Ribery was enough for Bayern Munich to defeat Hoffenheim while Hamburg’s Heung Min Son scored the only goal of the match against newly promoted Fuerth in German Bundeliga football. Schalke also cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win over struggling Wolfsburg.

Record champions Bayern equalled their own record-start with seven straight wins following a faultless performance against Hoffenheim. It took 19 minutes until the Bavarians opened scoring. Ribery utilised a through ball to beat goalkeeper Koen Casteels from inside left of the box. He scored again in the 47th minute when he curled a pass by Toni Kroos into the top left.

BETIS UP TO 4TH SPOT

Real Betis bounced back from two straight defeats as a Paulao header set them up for a 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad that lifted them up to fourth in the La Liga table. The Andalusian side had conceded a total of eight goals against Atletico Madrid and Malaga, but they managed to keep a clean sheet in an open game with chances at both ends.

They were two set-plays which decided the game as Paulao headed Betis in front after 18 minutes from a corner and Ruben Castro also with his head added to the lead with 10 minutes to go from a Benat Etxebarria free-kick.

Sociedad found themselves up against an inspired Adrian San Miguel in the Betis goal who made expert stops from Carlos Vela and Mikel Gonzalez. Getafe beat Zaragoza 1-0 in an away game.

SERIE A: GENOA HELD

Genoa climbed up to sixth in the Serie A table after earning a hard-fought point in a 1-1 draw with strugglers Palermo as Chievo beat Sampdoria to halt their five-match losing streak. Palermo, who secured their first victory of the campaign last weekend with a 4-1 trouncing of Chievo, were on course for a second consecutive win as Luigi Giorgi sent a glancing header past Genoa goalkeeper Sebastien Frey after a quarter of an hour.

The goal sparked Genoa into life though and the visitors were indebted to Samir Ujkani for keeping their lead intact going into half-time. But the Albanian’s resistance was finally broken as his goal was breached seven minutes into the second half when Marco Borriello headed in Cristobal Jorquera’s volleyed cross. Earlier, Chievo beat Sampdoria 2-1 in Eugenio Corini’s first match in charge of the Gialloblu.
