Voters brave chill, HP records 75% polling

The temperature at world highest polling booth at Hikkim was minus seven degrees,but voters’ braved chill to cast their votes and the state recorded over 75 percent polling after the sluggish start.
Polling was largely peacefull and barring an incident of clash at Chamba no other untoward incident was reported from any quarter. Chief Electoral Officer Narinder Chauhan said that the highest polling percentage was recorded at Sirmour with 81.48 percent.
‘The highest percentage of polling in a constituency was at Nalagarh with 94.80 percent and the lowest polling percentage of 58.77 percent was reported from Shimla urban assembly constituency,’ said Chauhan.
Counting of votes will be done on 20 Dec. HP had 46, 08, 359 voters and 459 candidates were in fray including 34 female and 105 independent candidates. Total of 7253 polling booths were setup in the state including one auxiliary polling station at Kasuali constituency.
CM Prem Kumar Dhumal exercise his franchise at Samirpur of Hamirpur district alongwith his son Anurag Thakur, union commerce minister Anand Sharma cast his vote at Shimla.
Former CM and Himachal Cong chief Virbhadra Singh cast his vote at Rampur, ex-chief minister Shanta Kumar cast his vote in Kangra and Congress veteran Vidya Stokes at Theog.
Talking to media after casting his vote chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal said that there is no anti-incumbency factor playing in the state and people would for development and the work done by the BJP government.
Chauhan said that country’s one of the oldest voter Shayam Sharan Negi (95) had also cast his vote at village polling booth of Kalpa in Kinnaur district.
According to election officials world highest polling station at Hikkim in Lahaul Spiti situated at the height of 14, 567 feet, total of 334 voters exercised their franchise out of 344 total voters as the temperature was minus seven degree celsius.

Himachal’s oldest voter Shyam Saran Negi, who has witnessed the shaping of democracy over almost seven decades, Sunday exercised his franchise along with his wife in this tiny picturesque hamlet in Kinnaur district. ‘I am thankful to the god for giving me an opportunity to elect the representative,’ Negi said. But he seemed to be disillusioned with the present political set-up.
