Voice sample nails Gurunath Meiyappan

The laboratory confirmed the voices of Meiyappan and Vindu Dara Singh, among others, are the same as those intercepted during the investigation.

If the court finds Gurunath guilty, Chennai Super Kings, owned by Srinivasan’s company India Cements Limited, could be banned from the T20 league. The Mudgal committee probing the matter is expected to submit its final report on 30 October. The next hearing of the case is on 10 November.

In February the committee said the ‘allegations of betting and passing information’ against Meiyappan ‘stand proved.’

In a 200-page document submitted to SC, the justice Mukul Mudgal-led committee had said the allegations of fixing against Meiyappan as well as Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra needed to be further investigated.

The report, based on the information provided by the Delhi and Mumbai police and comprising the FIR and chargesheet filed by Mumbai police, had said ‘Meiyappan was indulging in betting through Vindu Dara Singh who was in direct touch with the bookies and punters like Mr Vikram Aggarwal.’

‘Bets placed by Mr Meiyappan inter alia were not only in favour of CSK but also against it. Meiyappan also bet on teams in matches of teams other than CSK,’ the report had said.

Justice Mudgal was appointed to investigate the IPL scandal after an internal probe ordered by the BCCI cleared Meiyappan and Rajasthan Royals owner Raj Kundra of corruption. Meiyappan, the former CSK team principal, was accused of passing information to bookies and placing bets on IPL matches.

Aditya Verma, the petitioner in the Indian Premier League (IPL) spot-fixing case, on Friday said the people found guilty in the scam should be severely punished. ‘If those accused of spot-fixing and betting are found culpable, then I will appeal in the Supreme Court that strict action be taken against them. If necessary, a case of treason also should also be registered against them,’ he added. Verma also said that the lie-detector tests carried out earlier by the Mumbai Police had returned positive, implying their guilt,’ Verma told ANI.

‘The Mumbai Police that had arrested Gurunath Meiyappan and Vindoo Dara Singh earlier for match fixing in the sixth edition of the IPL had made them undergo the lie detector tests, which had returned positive. The question is that if the Mudgal report, that is yet to come to the Supreme Court, finds these allegations to be true, it will be very sad for the country, especially people who love cricket,’ Verma added.
