VK Singh faces apex court ire

The Supreme Court on Wednesday, hearing a suo motu contempt against former army chief General V K Singh who allegedly made contemptuous remarks on the apex court order on his date of birth row, said that it welcomes any criticism of its judgement but attributing motive to a judgement is not welcome.

A bench comprising of Justice R M Lodha and H L Gokhale said the statement of Gen Singh strikes at the very root of the judicial system. The bench said one cannot be allowed to scandalise the court. The court also pulled up the retired general for not filing his response on the notice issued by it and warned his lawyer not to take the case lightly. The court, which took strong exception to Singh's counsel seeking adjournment arguing senior counsel Ram Jethmalani was unable to appear as he was held up in another case, later agreed to adjourn the case to 20 November and directed Singh to file his response by 15 November.
