Vindicated! Delhi welcomes death penalty for 16 December rapists

Delhiites expressed satisfaction with the fast-track court verdict on Friday awarding death penalty to the four accused in the 16 December gang rape case.

People in the national capital had had their eyes trained on the news channels covering the court proceedings. For once, shopkeepers in market areas like Sarojini Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and Greater Kailash were found glued to the television sets, rather than attending to customers. As soon as reports of the quantum of punishment was declared on television, the sense of relief and joy in the markets was palpable.

The death sentence awarded to the four remained the hot topic of conversation across the city. 'Hurray! Finally some thing good has happened. All of them deserve capital punishment,' said Manoj, a shopkeeper in a garment showroom in Sarojini Nagar. Shopkeepers and customers were found discussing the verdict against the four convicts, Mukesh Singh, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Vinay Sharma.

Gaurav Mishra (27), a theatre artiste who had been among those protesting at India Gate against the 16 December gang rape said, 'Capital punishment is not the only solution to curb crimes against women. People’s mindsets need to change. Women should not be viewed as a commodity. It seems that the government officials, bureaucrats and the police are busy sharing credits by setting the verdict in this case as an example.'

A few complained against the ‘delay’ in getting justice. Gunjan Goyal (16), a school student said, 'I am happy with the verdict, but it took nine months for the fast track court to give its judgment. And this is not the final decision, as the four will approach high court and Supreme Court against this verdict. The case will linger on.'

A former Delhiite, who had been in the city at the time of the incident said, 'Post 16 December, 1,121 rape cases have been registered in Delhi alone. One death penalty is clearly not enough. I am also very disappointed with the fact that the juvenile rapist managed to get away so easily. Once he is out, he will be among us, but thanks to the laws we won't even know who he is. That's alarming. We need many more death verdicts and quickly, so that people think twice before committing such crimes.’

Meanwhile, a senior police official negated the apprehension that there has been a rise in the number of rape cases in the capital. 'The sudden increase in the number of rape cases is not because the instances of the crime being committed has increased, but because more victims are now coming out to file their complaints against the crime,’ he said.
