Village head suspended for Mahi’s death

The sarpanch of Kasan village has been suspended by the Gurgaon district administration on the charges of negligence, for the death of four-year-old Mahi, who fell into a 70-feet borewell on 20 June and was stuck in the borewell for five days.
The suspension order from the Deputy Commissioner of Gurgaon, P C Meena, said Kasan sarpanch Bimla Devi did not pay attention to the three open borewells near Mahi’s house.
The order further noted that on 21 June, while the district administration was present at the spot for the rescue operations, the sarpanch was absent. Later, her husband arrived at the spot in a drunken state and did nothing to rescue the victim.
A magisterial inquiry has already held six people, including Bimla Devi, responsible for the death of Mahi.
Besides Bimla Devi, others held liable are Rohtash Tayal, the owner of the building in which Mahi and her parents were residing, caretaker Surender Singh who used to collect rent from the tenants for Tayal, and gram sachiv Surjeet, the panch of the ward concerned and the owner of the boring or drilling machine used for drilling the borewell. Additional Deputy Commissioner K M Pandurang, who conducted the inquest, had submitted his 204-page report nearly three weeks ago to P C Meena.
Further hearing in the case would be conducted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate [SDM] of the area.
On the night of 20 June 2012, Mahi fell into the borewell outside her house during her birthday celebrations function. Despite efforts of the Army and district administration, she could not be saved.
