Vilasrao Deshmukh passes away

Union minister and former Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh died here Tuesday after a prolonged illness. He was 67.

Deshmukh died of multiple organ failure at 1:40 pm, sources at Chennai's Global Hospital said. Deshmukh, who had shown signs of improvement in his condition and was awaiting liver and kidney transplants, turned critical earlier in the day. His family members, including his three sons, were by his side when he breathed his last.

On Monday, a potential organ donor at a government hospital in Chennai was declared brain dead, giving hope that Deshmukh may survive if the liver could be transplanted. Unfortunately, the organ donor died before the doctors could operate on him, even as Deshmukh's condition deteriorated.

Deshmukh, who was union science and technology minister, was rushed to Chennai from Mumbai via air ambulance on August 6 in a critical condition with ventilator support. He had been in the intensive care unit under the care of a team of different specialists since.

On July 19, Deshmukh was in New Delhi for the presidential election.

Both houses of parliament were adjourned as soon as the news of the Congress leader's demise came in.

Deshmukh will be cremated at his native Babhalgaon village in Latur district on Wednesday.

The mortal remains of the departed leader will be brought to Latur on Wednesday and kept at his house in Babhalgaon from 9 am to 3 pm for people to pay their last respects, his brother Dilip Deshmukh said.

The funeral procession will start at 3 pm and last rites would be performed at 4 pm, he said.
