Video footage gets brick-throwing head constable arrested & sacked

The entire incident was captured on camera by a person in a car, who had halted at the intersection. In the video clip, the head constable, identified as Satish Chandra, was also caught twisting the woman’s arm in the presence of her three daughters. The clip further shows that the woman apparently came close to the cop to confront him, after the brick hit her on the back.

The clip soon went viral. Its impact galvanised the police department into action and in no time, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi himself came forward and informed that Chandra has been suspended and also directed police in the district concerned to register a criminal complaint against him.

The woman, identified as Ramanjit Kaur, was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, where she was reportedly treated for a fracture in her left arm. Kaur, later, got the complaint registered at the Tughlaq Road police station and the erring police official was arrested by 3.30 pm under relevant sections of the IPC.

According to a police source, the woman was riding a scooter with her daughters and was stopped by the head constable when she allegedly jumped a red light. When she was asked to produce her drivers’ licence, she reportedly fished out a photocopy from her bag, which the cop refused to accept.

This led to an argument between them and the woman allegedly hurled a stone at the policeman, which hit his motorbike. The head constable – who has been serving in the police since 1988 – was provoked by this act and retaliated.

Later, the woman told media that the argument was triggered, following the cop allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 200 and forcibly pulling her off the scooter.

“It was a disgraceful incident. In fact, we had held a meeting on May 3, in which all traffic officials were asked to maintain calm while on duty,” said Muktesh Chander, Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

Later in the evening, Chander informed that Satish Chandra has been dismissed from service.
