Victim’s memory lives on in minds of many

The parents of the victim today participated at a prayer meeting where the mother broke down while remembering her daughter who had died in a Singapore hospital after battling for life for 13 days.

‘We have not yet got justice. We want all the culprits including the one, who was a juvenile at the time of the incident, to be hanged,’ the father said.

A large number of people lit candles at the Munirka bus stop in south Delhi from where the girl along with a male friend had boarded the bus, thinking it to be a legitimate public carriage.

She was brutally gang-raped by six men while her friend was also assaulted before they were thrown off the vehicle. The horrific incident had triggered massive public outrage in Delhi as well as across the country, forcing the government to enact stricter laws against sexual assault.

A group of youngsters tried to retrace the victim’s fateful route from a theatre in Saket after watching the movie ‘Life of Pi’, to mark the first anniversary of the incident.

A group of young rights activists on Monday retraced the sequence of events to the leading to the fatal gangrape of the 23-year-old woman in a moving bus on way from Saket to Mahipalapur here, marking the first anniversary of an incident that had shaken the conscience of the nation.

Boarding a chartered bus from Saket, the activists stopped by at the Munrika bus stand from where the duo had boarded the bus and chanted slogans and sang songs of ‘fearless freedom’.

The gathering included students, artists, photographers, feminists and film actress Swara Bhaskar also lent vocal support to them. Her father and strategic affairs expert C Uday Bhaskar was also in the crowd.

Stephen Joseph, an executive in a private company who lives in Kishan Garh in south Delhi, not very far from the Munirka bus stand, which he uses to go to his office every day, said ‘the incident still plays on his mind’.

‘Today is the anniversary of that horrific incident and every bus reminds me of that day, especially the whiteline one,’ he said while paying tribute to the girl.
