Verma steers SAIL sales to 10% rise in November

'Backed by a renewed thrust on marketing, SAIL achieved total sales of 9.7 lakh tonne in November 2013, registering a 10 per cent growth over same month last year,' the state-run steel-maker said in a statement.

While domestic sales were at 9.1 lakh tonne, exports zoomed three-fold to 61,000 tonne in November, compared to a year ago.

'The company accelerated its export sales, with shipments to the tune of 61,000 tonne during November 2013 representing a three-fold growth over the same month last year.' it said.

Cumulative exports during the April-November period were up by 72 per cent at 3.2 lakh tonne, SAIL said. The PSU, which is expanding its capacity with Rs 72,000 crore investment, said a rebuilt coke oven battery at Durgapur Steel Plant has recently been commissioned.

'Rebuilt at a cost of Rs 213 crore, this battery will augment the capacity of saleable steel from the present level of 1.60 million tonne to 2.12 MT,' SAIL said. Meanwhile, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has registered best ever April-November performance in key production areas.

During this period, the plant produced 1.64 million tonnes (MT) of hot metal, 1.51 MT of crude steel and 1.46 MT of saleable steel, registering growth of 5.2 per cent, 3.7 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively over the corresponding period last year, RSP sources said on Thursday.

Besides, highest-ever production of sinter (2.46 MT) and plate mill plates (0.32 MT) are the other highlights during the period.

The major contributors in this success were the plate mill that made 48,932 tonnes of plates and the hot strip mill that produced 1.58 lakh tonnes of HR Coils.
