Vendors’ association protests against police harassment

They demanded immediate suspension of the SHO Vasant Kunj (south) for allowing his policemen to demand bribes from the vendors.

Police have arrested four vendors for attacking the policemen and South Delhi Municipal Corporation officials on Wednesday. NASVI approached ACP-Vasant Vihar to lodge a cross FIR against the police officers for demanding the extortion money from the vendors. But police refused to register the FIR and have received a written complaint from NASVI instead. ‘Further investigation is underway,’ a police official at Vasant Kunj (south) said.

On Wednesday, a joint team of South DMC conducted an anti-encroachment drive to remove the street vendors from the area. ‘The officials have taken the items available in the stalls in their custody. The police demanded bribe but the vendors refused to pay them. The police have also beaten up the vendors,’ Arbind Singh, national coordinator of NASVI alleged.

The police had accompanied SDMC officials to ensure that law and order is not disturbed. ‘The vendors under the influence of NASVI turned violent and pelted stones on the team leaving three officials injured that includes a head constable and two SDMC officials,’ a police official said.

Four vendors identified as Ravi Shankar Shah (28), Bhola Prasad (70), Suresh Prasad (53) and Manoj Kumar (47) were arrested by the police and they have been booked under section 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the IPC. On Thursday, the accused were granted bail.

Speaking to Millennium Post, Puja Prasad, who was allegedly beaten up the police said, ‘The police used to take Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 from each vendor standing in D-block of Vasant Kunj. When we refused to pay them they beat us up. No female police personnel was present in the team.’
Meanwhile, NASVI faxed a letter to Delhi Urban Development and Local Bodies Minister Manish Sisodia and the police commissioner BS Bassi demanded urgent intervention into the matter.
NASVI has called for a demonstration on Friday.
