Varun sees Vajpayee’s reflection in Rajnath

Stoking the Prime Ministerial candidate debate within the BJP, Varun Gandhi, MP from Pilibhit, compared party president Rajnath Singh to Atal Bihari Vajpayee and said the former has the ability to lead the country by unifying people.

‘I can say with full confidence that if there is any individual in the country who has that ability to bring together people of different religions and castes, then it is Rajnath Singh,’ said Gandhi at a public rally in Bareilly on Wednesday. Gandhi’s comment are being viewed as an indirect attack on Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, whose secular credentials have been questioned by many, including Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar.

Varun said there are no two views on the fact that Rajnath Singh has a reflection of Vajpayee. ‘Singh is a leader with a clean image and a son of Uttar Pradesh. It is the duty of the people of UP to support him so that people with clean image can come to power,’ said Varun.

Varun’s support for Singh comes at a time when there is a growing chorus within the BJP for making Modi the PM candidate in the next Lok Sabha elections. Rajnath Singh, however, tried to downplay the comparison and said no party leader can take the place of either Vajpayee or Advani.
