Varun acquitted in hate speech case

A court in Pilibhit district on Friday acquitted BJP general Secretary and MP from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi in a case related to violence after his arrest over hate speech during election campaign in March 2009.

Earlier the court had acquitted him in the both hate speech cases registered against him in the run-up to 2009 Lok Sabha polls. He was acquitted in the first case on 27 February and the second one on 5 March.

 In the both the cases, Varun was acquitted for the want of evidence. The two cases were lodged against Varun in 2009 during campaign for the LS elections after he allegedly made inflammatory speeches.

District Judge Vinod Mishra exonerated  Gandhi after no evidences were found against him though the court will continue the case against nine other BJP activists in the same case.

Around 40 people appeared for recording their statement as witness and all of them claimed that Varun was not involved. However, the main petitioner of the case one Ramesh had died during trial. The case number 266/09 was registered under section 147,148,307,427,336,332,120(B),188 of IPC and seven criminal law acts against Gandhi and nine others on 28 March, 2009.
