Vardhan to issue global call for fight against TB

Union health minister Harsh Vardhan, who left for Barcelona, Spain on Monday, will issue a global call for fighting life threatening disease tuberculosis. ‘The health minister, during his four-day trip, will deliver the keynote address at the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) symposium on tuberculosis (TB),’ a health ministry statement said.

The health ministry releases further added that the minister will stress the importance of community driven solutions to TB, the disease which is considered the biggest killer worldwide, in his address to international health experts at the symposium.

The incidence of tuberculosis is the highest in India, a country which reports 230 cases per one lakh population.

Discussions on a possible Memorandum of Understanding on sharing of knowledge on organ donation with Spain, the country with the highest rate of organ donation, are also on the cards. During a day-long trip to Madrid, Vardhan will also hold a meeting with his Spanish counterpart, Ana Mato, the press note said.

‘I look forward to this visit because I have already geared up the ministry to accept the challenge of eliminating the tuberculosis scourge and meeting the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) by 2015,’ the union minister said before leaving.
