Vacuum in leadership causes political instability in Uttarakhand

Political instability seems to be the biggest hurdle to the development of Uttarakhand as BJP and the Congress ruled this state with outside support, and none could repeat its success consecutively. Revolting voices of unhappy MLAs inside ruling political parties forced the central leadership to change CMs several times for last 13 years.

‘In last 13 years, Uttarakhand has changed six chief ministers. While, in Delhi, Sheila Dikshit ruled for 15 years. Why  do we lack such charismatic leadership in our state,’ asked senior bureaucrat on condition of anonymity.

Former Uttar Pradesh CM and senior Congress leader N D Tiwari was the only chief minister, who ruled for full five years from 2002 -07 despite severe criticism over several issues. Bhagat Singh Koshiyari was the most unfortunate, who ruled for only 123 days.

Political indifferences have erupted within state Congress party from time to time, ever since Vijay Bahuguna took over as CM on 13 March 2012. Several senior Congress leaders like Harish Rawat, Satpal Maharaj and Indira Hridayesh were sidelined to make the roads clear for the incumbent and inexperienced Bahuguna.

He has been facing  allegations of certain factions of MLAs like Dharchula MLA Harish Dhami, Manoj Tiwari from Almora, Lalit Faraswan from Kapkot, Mayuk Mahar from Pittoragarh, Hemesh Karakwal from Champawat who are considered to be close to Harish Rawat camp for neglecting their respective constituencies. But the cacophony of last year’s natural disaster deafened all the revolting voices in the state. The whole attention was diverted to relief and rescue operations in the four pilgrim centers.
