Uttarakhand floods leave Gzb, Noida residents thirsty

Following flash flood in Uttarakhand, water supply in the national Capital and UP-NCR has been affected these days. Although water supply is low in some parts of the trans-Yamuna in the city, Noida and Ghaziabad — two major cities of the NCR are badly affected.

The officials of the water departments have said the supply of water has gone down as large quantity of silt and other such materials have been mixed in water due to the floods and have speculated that the supply of Ganga water will be improved in the next two to three days.

According to officials of UP Irrigation Department, supply of Ganga water has almost stopped from Upper Ganga Canal in Uttarakhand resulting in silt getting mixed with flood waters. The officials informed that only minimum quantity is being released to meet the requirement. The officials claimed that the situation might improve from Thursday onwards as 100 cuses water has been released earlier which will take 72 hours to reach the region. As raw water for Bhagirathi and Sonia Vihar water plants in the Capital come from the Upper Ganga Canal, households of these areas are getting lesser water. The residents claim that water supply has been reduced nearly 50 percent with low pressure also.

The officials of the water department, however, have claimed that they have maintained adequate supply to the household despite the ongoing problem in the hill state. ‘We are aware of the flood in Uttarakhand but the situation is not that bad. If supply affects up to alarming level it will be announced accordingly. For now, we are monitoring the situation,’ said an official. The residents of Noida and Ghaziabad have claimed that the supply of Ganga water has been stopped since Sunday and they are forced to use hard water. They blamed the water department for the mess as no step was taken earlier to tackle the problem.

Meanwhile, the officials of the water department have said that they are maintaining minimum water supply as they have little stock in Pratap Vihar of Ghaziabad and in Noida too. ‘As no water has been received for the past few days, we are supplying water from the stored stock. As per information, water from Upper Ganga Canal might reach the region in the next couple of days,’ said an official of water department of Vasundhara region in Ghzaziabad.

A total of 50 Cusec Ganga water comes in UP-NCR which is distributed in trans-Hindon area, and other parts of Ghaziabad and Noida.
